8-30 am- Rudabai Adalaj Stepwell
Adalaj step well is located in a small village Adalaj which is located on the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar highway. This is five stories deep step well built in the 15th century. These wells were an integral part of semi-arid regions of Gujarat for the supply of water. In Gujarati language stepwell is called “vav”. It is octagonal in plan at the top, built on the intricately carved large number of pillars made of sandstone. While there are many step wells in Gujarat, this one is the most famous and a must see in Ahmedabad.
10-30 am- Sabarmati Ashram (1hr)
This is one of the most visited places in Ahmedabad, by locals and outsiders alike. Situated on the banks of Sabarmati River, the ashram area is a great place to explore the life of Gandhiji and historical anecdotes of his movements in the pre-independence time. This was Gandhiji’s resident for more a long twelve years.
12 pm- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial (1 to 1.5 hr)
The Moti Shahi Mahal, built by erstwhile Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century now houses the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Museum. It is a great place to know life and history of Sardar Patel which is showcased nicely in the ground floor hall and adjacent rooms. One of the rooms also showcases life and work of Mahatma Gandhi. The upper floor room exhibits works of Rabindra Nath Tagore who happened to stay in the palace during his teenage and wrote one of the most famous thriller books “The hungry stones” while living here. It is a technically advanced and interactive museum unlike other museums in India. It also houses audio-visual rooms for visitors to know about the history of Indian freedom movement.
1.30 pm- Lunch (40 mins)
Do not forget to sample a traditional Gujarati thali. It is best experienced in one of the long-running traditional restaurants in the old city near Elis bridge. Our recommendation is Gopi Dining Hall, opposite Town Hall, Ellisbridge.
2.30 pm- Sidi Saiyyed Jali Mosque (20mins)
Sidi Saiyad’s Mosque or Jali mosque is a mosque with unique architecture in Ahmedabad! The beautifully carved stone latticework windows (Jalis) on the side and rear arches are a thing to see and cherish. Witnessing those marvel artworks also give you a kind of visual illusion due to the intricate latticework.
3.30- Lal Darwaza (45 mins)
Ahmedabad was built over an ancient settlement of Bhadra Fort and thus the city has many gates surrounding its central core area. Lal Darwaza or teen Darwaza as it is famously known for the three arches of the gate is a popular landmark in Ahmedabad. It is more popular due to the huge market that takes place around this place. It is crowded yet one of the most famous local markets in Ahmedabad. From dresses to jewellery to electronic items you get it all here. Although, one needs to bargain to get a good price. It is also the place with amazing street food stalls.
4.30 pm- Jama Masjid (45 mins)
This Masjid, Juma Masjid was built in 15th century during the rule of Ahmad Shah, this Jama Masjid is one of the largest Masjids in India. The Masjid was built in an attractive Persian-Muslim architecture, it houses the tombs of the Muslim emperor and his family.
The structure is built entirely in red sandstone with creative carvings, sandstone meshes (jails) and also pillars. According to the writings on the Juma Masjid walls, the Masjid was intended to be used only by the Sultans and their family. It is highly recommended for visitors.
5.30 pm- Calico Textile Museum (2hr)
Calico Textile Museum was built in 1949 by the Sarabhai foundation and is situated in the heart of Ahmadabad’s textile industry. This museum was earlier housed at the calico mills but as the collections grew, the complex was moved to a different location, the carved haveli which was the earlier residence of the Sarabhai family.
This museum exhibits textiles used by the Mughal rulers and several types of cloths produced during the 19th century. It also contains temple hangings, paintings, sculptures and also religious texts.
7.30 pm- Kankaria Lake (2hr)
It is the biggest artificial lake in Ahmedabad. A great place to spend quality time with kids and family during the evening. Eateries, Toy trains, several kids friendly amusement activities are available here. After a day’s excursion through the city, it is a good place to relax and enjoy the local street food.
