The Bailey Trail Group Tour
In the summers of 1911-12, two high ranking British officers, F M Bailey and H T Morshed, were commissioned by the British Colonial government to survey the Arunachal Pradesh and Tibet border area. The trek they chose, which is also an ancient trade route between Burma, India and Tibet is today known as “The Bailey Trail’, which passes through isolated forests of the Eastern Himalayas filled with pine, oak and rhododendrons. Breathtakingly beautiful landscape views can be seen while on this trek, with majestic views of the Gorichen and Kangto Peaks, two of Northeast India’s highest peaks. The trek will cross the Sela Pass at an astounding 4550 meters, high mountains, glacial rivers, lakes, tribal villages and the end will be a drive to Tawang where the second oldest Buddhist monastery is majestically built and located.

Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Guwahati to Dirang-Dzong
We kick start the tour with an early morning drive of 370 kms from Guwahati to Dirang-Dzong at an altitude of 1550meters. Visit Tipi-research en-route to witness various endangered species of wild orchids along with hundreds others. Stay overnight at hotel.
Day 2: Monpa Village
We start early and drive to a Monpa Tribe village of Namshu located at an altitude of 2090 meters. Visit the ancient Buddhist monastery and start trekking through the forests on a 4 hour steep climb to Chander Village and camp overnight.
Day 3: Thingri
Today we continue our hiking and hike for about 5 hours through forests and yak pastures with superb views of snow-clad peaks and the surrounding valleys. We will camp overnight at Thingri.
Day 4: Changla
The day will be of a hard trek with about 6 hours of steep climbing through the coniferous forests. The landscape will offer breathtaking views of the eastern Himalayas. You will climb till just below Changla for overnight stay in tents.
Day 5: Potak
Today you’ll start climbing early, crossing the Changla Pass (3650 meters) where you can see picturesque views of the eastern Himalayas. Then we will be faced with a steep climb to Poshing la Pass (3950 meters). From the pass, you’ll descend through the forests of Juniper and Rhododendrons and cross a glacial stream before continuing your climb of another 4 hours to the alpine pastures of Potak (4200 meters) to camp at a beautiful spot near a stream.
Day 6: Lorthum
After breakfast, start climbing again steadily for another 4 hours to reach Sela Pass (4550 meters), the highest point of this trek with majestic views of the Gorichen and Kangto peaks. Visit the alpine lake near the pass and then descend for about 2 hours into the valley and camp at Lorthum.
Day 7: Mango Village
After breakfast a 6 hour long trek awaits us along the river valley through dense coniferous forests, crossing Yak huts along the way to reach a tributary of Tawang-chu River and camp overnight near Mago Village (3500 meters).
Day 8: Thingbu
Today we keep trekking along the Tawang-chu River and then take steep climb to Thimbu village (4200 meters). We stay overnight at the campsite in Thimbu.
Day 9: Tawang
Today will be indulging in a long 6 hours trek through the forests, crossing the Tawang-chu River and its tributaries several times over log and suspension bridges to reach the highway. Drive to Tawang for overnight stay at hotel.
Day 10: Tawang
Spend the day sightseeing around the town of Tawang. Visit the famous Tawang Monastery located at the top of a hill and overlooking the entire landscape. The monastery is the second oldest in Tibetan Buddhism and is a center for enlightened studies. Evening can be spent exploring the market area of Tawang and indulging in a little souvenir shopping. Stay overnight at hotel.
Day 11: Bomdila
After breakfast, drive to Bomdila (6 hours) for overnight stay in 3 star hotel. Rest of the day will be free to explore around town and visit the markets.
Day 12: Guwahati
Drive to Guwahati (10-12 hours) in Assam for overnight stay in a 3 star standard hotel.
Day 13: Departure
Drive to Guwahati Airport (1 hour) for a flight back home.
